Domaine Sylvian Cathiard ~ Fils te Vosne-Romanée

There is no one hotter in Burgundy these days than Sylvain Cathiard and his performance in 2004 will only add to the luster of his reputation - aldus Bourgognespecialist Allen Meadows in zijn toenmalige nieuwsbrief Burghound.com.

A good winegrower distinguishes himself in the difficult years and 2004 certainly was. At the time, it was also the first vintage that we were able to introduce exclusively for the Belgian market. It is in those years that one enters a domain with that reputation.

After graduating from the Lycée Viticole in Beaune in 1979, Sylvain Cathiard started working with his father André. In 1984 he set up his own domain to take over the properties of his father in 1994. Most of the vineyards are located in Vosne-Romanée, but he also owns some plots in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The domain is only a small 5 ha but they have holdings in resounding 1er Crus such as En Orveaux, Aux Reignots, Les Suchots and Aux Malconsorts. Last but not least, they have about 3 barrels of Romanée-Saint-Vivant every year.

The style of his wines is a perfect balance between explosive fruit, a firm structure, silky tannins and enormous finesse. In the meantime, it is his son Sébastien who continues his father's work and is responsible for the vinification from the 2011 and 2012 vintage.

The style has remained the same, but it seems that the wines show even more precision in his way of vinification. As with Arnaud Mortet, the use of wood is gradually reduced for the Village wines and certain 1er Crus and small details during vinification and élevage ensure even better wines. It is certain that the wines of this domain can compete with the very best of Vosne-Romanée and therefore the whole of the Côte de Nuits. They are sold annually by allocation.
