Always looking for new emerging talents, I asked Sébastien Cathiard a few years ago if he had any tips for me. He told me about Thomas Colladot, his best friend, who was busy with the metamorphosis of a domain completely unknown to me in Flagey-Echezeaux.
After several appointments at the domain, I thought the time was ripe with the 2016 vintage to start distributing the wines. The quality had improved enormously and there was no Belgian distributor yet. A little later, Neal Martin from Vinous media discovered the domain, and I realized that I had been just in time to secure an allocation. Once the Anglo-Saxon press starts writing about it, you are usually too late.
The special thing about the domain is that it has 9 hectares of vineyards on the most beautiful terroirs in the Côte de Nuits.
Half divided between Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny and the other half over no fewer than 6 Grand Crus; Charmes-Chambertin, Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint-Denis, Clos de Vougeot, Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux. Furthermore, a small parcel of Vosne 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts that is blended with the younger Echezeaux sticks.
Coquard-Loison-Fleurot has had quite a journey. A few years ago you could still find the wines from the domain in the local supermarkets of Beaune. In addition, a large part of the production was sold to local négociants. However, things have changed dramatically: Coquard-Loison-Fleurot wines are now highly sought after in most of the world.
Domaine Coquard-Loison-Fleurot made a nice series of lively and energetic wines in 2021.
